The University Park Public Library, in partnership with the Friends of the University Park Public Library’s Meet Me at the Library Series and a grant from La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas, is pleased to announce the 2026 Community Read selection: Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.
This community-wide initiative invites residents to read and discuss this celebrated classic together. Beginning May 26, participants may register at the Library for a weekly newsletter and sign up to receive a free copy of the book, while supplies last (library card required). Programs and events will continue through August 2026.
What Is the Community Read?
The Community Read is a shared reading experience designed to bring people together through literature. Participants across the community are encouraged to read Lonesome Dove and take part in discussions and programs that explore its themes, characters, and lasting impact.
This concept began in 1998 with the Washington Center for the Book’s “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book” project. Since then, communities nationwide have embraced similar programs to foster connection through reading.
Why Participate?
The Community Read offers an opportunity to engage more deeply with a great work of literature while connecting with others. As Lonesome Dove celebrates over 40 years as a Texas classic, it continues to resonate with readers. Reading Lonesome Dove invites reflection on history, relationships, and the human experience.
Sharing perspectives with friends, neighbors, family members, and colleagues enriches the reading experience and strengthens community bonds. Through this shared journey, we build connections and create a stronger, more engaged University Park.
How to Get a Library Card
